My disaster is the 1970 Peru avalanche. It all started in Yungay,Peru on the 31st of May at 3:23, While people were watching the fifa soccer match they didn't know what was coming for them. A magnitude in the range of 7.8-8 it killed about 20,000-100,000 people and buried the town of Yungay and Ranrahirca. This cost them a lot of money. About 250 million dollars of property damage. You may be wondering a lot of things like how could just a mountain do this, or how long did this take, or how bout how fast it was going. Well the definition of a avalanche is -avalanche is a rapid flow of snow down a sloping surface. which means that if this was happening at the speed of 210-280 km/h this could do some heavy damage and it did. This horrifying tragedy happened in not a min not two min but 45 seconds. To me 45 sec is not a lot and it might have not been for them but the aftermath of it probably caused more damage than we think. Interesting fact: The town of Yungay is still buried till this day.
Did you know that avalanches occurred in mountainous region. Mountainous regions is a large land form that stretches above the surrounding land in a limited area, usually in the form of a peak. A lot of avalanches happen during or right after winter storms. Did you know that the snow falling rate is about 1 inch or more per hour. Which rapidly increases avalanche danger.
